Into the Holiday Season and the Start of Revisions

Today is the last day before Thanksgiving vacation starts for my kids, which means it’s the last day before vacation starts for me too. This year we plan to just celebrate the holiday as a family with a little turkey breast dinner (we don’t eat the dark meat so I buy one of those turkey breast on the bone and roast it) and there will probably be pie. Every weekend needs an excuse for pie. There probably won’t be anything made from sweet potatoes since we’re Canadian and don’t really care for those. I’ll make perogies instead. Yum! Turkey and perogies… Since my girls are also Americans, we try to celebrate the holiday for them so they grow up with both Canadian and American traditions. The best of both worlds, right? And that means we get to eat turkey and perogies twice each fall. Double yum.

This long weekend is also the kick-off for my NaNo novel revisions. I think I’ve officially finished the book at 53K and now begins the big job of rereading, editing, rewriting, and polishing. I’m not sure how much will change, but I’ll find out soon enough. I think some scenes will need to be lengthened. I may add in a few new scenes too if needed. I’m pretty sure no scenes are getting cut, but sentences will for sure. The goal is to get it finished before we go back to Canada for christmas holidays, then have a couple of beta readers see what they think, then revisions again after the new year, and finally sending it out for subs sometime in Jan or Feb. Sounds like a pretty manageable goal to me, so that’s what I’m aiming for. If things move quickly, maybe it’ll be ready to sub a little earlier, but there’s no rush.

What are your plans this holiday weekend? Are you busy cleaning for the onslaught of holiday visitors? Are you the visitors that are making someone else clean their house from top to bottom today? Will you be working this weekend too?

Whatever your plans, have a happy and safe holiday weekend. Be careful on the roads if you’re driving. If you’re flying, be ready to spread ’em for a pat down. And if you’re sticking close to home, relax and enjoy the extra days off!

What I Learned From NaNoWriMo

I know that NaNoWriMo isn’t officially over yet, but since I hit my 50K I feel like I can say I’m done. Woot!! I still have more to do, but that’s beside the point. Moving on!

Here are a few things I learned along the way while participating—and winning!—my first attempt at NaNoWriMo.

1. I can write everyday. Somedays that will mean I get 5000 words, other days that will mean I get 500. But, I can find the time almost every single day to stick my butt in the chair and write. I did skip a couple of days this month, but I was at DisneyWorld! I get a free pass on days I was at the most magical place on earth for 13 straight hours each day. Seriously, we were there forever. It was awesome!

2. Not every sentence I write has to be an award winner right off the hop. Some of them will suck for a little while and that’s okay because I’ll go back and fix them later. No one has to ever find out about the stinky first attempt sentences…shhh, don’t tell…

3. Turning off my inner editor was harder than I thought, but rewarding when achieved. I like to edit as I go. Write, Edit, Write, Repeat! But it does slow me down a lot. Writing with the freedom of knowing that I’ll come back to it in a little while was kinda nice. *Kinda* but now I really need to go and edit before I chew right through my red pen!

4. My house will not clean itself. Nope, it just won’t. And no amount of wishing, praying, or begging is going to make it start. Damn you stupid non-self-cleaning house!!

5. I can write *a lot* and still be a good mom. I was worried that one would have to suffer for the benefit of the others, but turns out I’m a pretty good mulit-tasker! Go Mom!

6. I get a lot more done when my hubby is away with work. That sounds kinda mean, but it’s totally true. When he’s home, we hang out in the evening, watching shows, talking, and playing video games — I *heart* Fallout Las Vegas. But when he’s away, I don’t turn the TV on. I sit and do stuff like this — yep, right now, writing this here little piece of glorious wisdom 😉 — update my other private family only blog, deal with pictures, etc. oh yeah…and I WRITE! A lot! I write a lot when he’s away in the evening. Still I’d rather have him home.

7. Halloween treats prevent writer’s block. There, I said it. No really, they do! I ate a steady supply of leftover treats and I didn’t have writer’s block once this month. Therefore, those little bite sized morsels of ooey, gooey goodness must cure writer’s block. Hmm, I think there’s a reason that NaNoWriMo starts the day after we all go collect bags full of candy. Now you’re thinking it too aren’t you?

8. Coffee doesn’t make up for lack of sleep. Heather is a cranky, cranky girl with not enough sleep. No one likes a cranky Heather. Don’t poke the cranky Heather, she might bite.

9. I can write quickly when I’m focused, and a lot of it will be not too bad. Some of it will stink up the place, but the rest is staying. Might need a few tweaks here and there, but the bones are good. Every story needs good bones. Good bones help prevent saggy middles.

10. Fellow writer’s — wrimo’s and non-wrimo’s — are AWESOME! I mean really, really awesome. I had no idea how important it was to have a network of peers who you can lean on, ask questions of, answer questions for, learn from etc…the list of greatness just goes on and on. Seriously, the support, encouragement, and cheerleading I received was just great. It makes the lonely job of putting those 50K words on my laptop screen so much more fun. So thanks. I heart you and your comments every time you stop by my blog to support me!

That’s it. That’s all I have. Every pearl of my ultimate (LOL!) wisdom is in those ten…well maybe I have one more…

11. My house won’t clean itself!!! What? How lazy is my house? Seriously, it can’t do the dishes once in a while for me? Not a single little load of laundry to help out the poor, tired writer? Come on!

ETA: Okay, I thought of one more!

12. I should not, repeat NOT think about my current WIP while trying to pull my rather large SUV in or out of my rather narrow garage. I swear I almost took the side mirrors off twice this month!!! Yikes.

My Official ‘Win’!!

50053!!!

I did it! I ‘won’ at nanowrimo and well ahead of schedule! I can’t even believe that I did it. I’m a little bit in shock. And I’m just a little bit tired. Hahaha!

My story is technically finished at this point since I just wrote the final scene, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Somewhere along the way I thought of a couple of things I wanted to add in, but I didn’t want to stop my progress to go back and add them. So that will be my first task. Then it’s time for the big reread. Then will be the fun of editing the whole thing. I have to say I’m really excited for the reread and the editing. I like editing and changing and manipulating the words to get them just right.

(sigh) I’m done. Whew. That was fun and intense. *SQUEEE* I’m done!

Finish Line, I See You!!

Hello fellow NaNo peeps! I’m down to less than 5K left to write to officially ‘win’ at NaNoWriMo!!! I should be done in a day or two if all goes well with writing tonight and tomorrow! I’m so excited to know that I’m going to complete the goal I set for myself and ahead of schedule. Woot!!

Then it will be time for a reread, editing, and anything else I need to do for this novel. Wow! Can’t believe I can already see the finish line and it’s only Nov 17th. And I can still think straight. Wow. Just wow.

Will be back when my words are finished!!

And I'm Back!

Did anyone miss me? Did anyone know I was gone, LOL?!

I just returned from vacation with my family. We went to Disney World for five days and it was wonderful! I can’t think of a better vacation we’ve had together as a family. But now that I’m back, it’s back to work!

I tried to work on my WIP and NaNoWriMo novel while we were away and I managed about 6,000 words. Not bad considering we were rarely in our room and when we were, it was usually just to crash from exhaustion of being in the theme parks and pools all day. But I did as much as I could, and I’m happy with what I accomplished.

I wanted to give a quick shout-out to everyone who stopped my blog this past Sunday for Six Sentence Sunday! I truly appreciate you coming by to read my work and for leaving me comments! Sadly, my wordpress app doesn’t allow me to reply to comments, only approve them so my replies came late last night. But don’t think I didn’t read, enjoy and appreciate every single comment, because I did. So thanks! And I hope to see you all again next week!

Alright, so it’s back to work. I dealt with some submission business for my novella. Now my blog is updated. Then it’s time to prep my six sentence for next Sunday. Finally, I’ll get to work on my WIP again and I hope to cross the 40K mark today. Did I mention picking up the dog from the kennel, the kid from school, laundry, dinner etc, etc? Yep, it’s good to be back and back to work in all aspects!

What’s up with you? Did I miss anything important in your life while I was away?
