#RelayForLife

080226005_RelayU_Hope_Theme_v1

I don’t usually post about personal things going on in my life, but today, I am.

Back in October of 2014 my aunt Judy was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung and Brain cancer. I wrote a post about it back then, but could never bring myself to post it. It was just too…real. But here’s what I wrote, which has been sitting in my drafts since then:

Most of the time life goes by on a fairly normal path. Day-to-day is basically the same with a few variables thrown in for good measure. You get comfortable and  forget that life isn’t so easy for others. And then sometimes life decides to really mix things up.

Last week, our lives got all mixed up and we had no warning.

On the Sunday of Canadian Thanksgiving, my aunt Judy was taken to the ER because she’d been sick for so long with a chest cold and vomiting that it was to the point that she just couldn’t manage anymore. When her kids put her in the car to take her, she couldn’t even fasten her own seatbelt. There was just too much confusion and weakness. It was as if she’d forgotten how to do it.

Approximately 10 hours later, the diagnosis was clear. And devastating. And unexpected.

Lung cancer.

I wish I could say that was our low point of the week. I really do. But the time since those first two words were said has been a constant roller coaster of stomach churning drops.

Mid-week—Brain cancer.

Friday—we waited to hear if her emergency brain surgery had been successful. It was.

But her cancer is stage 4. Terminal. Such a cold, cruel, gut-wrenching word.

In one short week, we went from being our normal family, each doing their own thing to rallying around my aunt, facing our fears of mortality, hoping against hope, and trying to stay above water long enough to find out what came next.

Next became a series of tests and doctors visits. Whole head radiation, medication schedules, chemotherapy. And through it all, my aunt has stayed tough. Her road hasn’t been easy to travel, but she’s still taking it one step at a time.

Aunt Judy and me during our trip back home to visit her over Easter break.

Aunt Judy and me during our trip back home to visit her over Easter break.

So why am I talking about it now? Because I’m tired of feeling like my hands are tied by being so far away from my family. Everyone else cares for my aunt Judy in some way, taking her to doctor’s appointments, hanging out with her during her chemo appointments, watching food shows on TV and eating copious amounts of chocolate. I mean really, I could do that! I love chocolate!!

Well, I can’t be around on a daily basis to lend support, but I can help out right from here. So I signed up for my local Relay for Life event, joined a team, and started fundraising!!! And I would love it if you could help me reach my goal. Any little bit will help!

Cancer sees no color, gender, or economic status. Cancer doesn’t discriminate. It’s time to stand up and fight back. If we work together, we all benefit because at some point cancer will touch your life or the life of your friend or family member. When it does, wouldn’t it be nice to have a cure?

How long have you been writing/published?

I began writing years ago, but didn’t publish until three years ago. Now it’s a passion and a huge part of my life!

How do you start writing your books? Do you start with the overall plot idea or the characters or maybe just a scene?

The characters always speak to me and that’s how I begin. I laugh at myself, because it’s kind of like how psychics are supposed to hear voices from the dead … well, I hear voices of unreal people. It’s my job to make them real on the pages of my books!

What’s your writing space like? Do you write in an office, coffee shop, on the couch?

I do my best writing snuggled up in my bed. I have an office, but it’s just not as comfy.

Aside from writing and reading, what do you like to do for fun?

I don’t have any exciting hobbies, but I like to play on the computer and play the piano. I’m also known to go to the movies every weekend and indulge in buttery popcorn.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and with whom?

I love to travel and I actually have a bucket list. First is NEW YORK CITY, baby! Yes, I have a series around New York, so I should definitely visit, don’t you think? I’d also like to visit the Mediterranean.

Naming favorite books is impossible, but how about favorite authors or series? What’s your favorite genre to read?

Jill Shalvis is my go-to author. I love her wit, sexy alphas and hot romances. I’m a contemporary romance girl all the way, but I also like to read regencies when I’m in the mood.

Who was your last book boyfriend? Are you still together or have you started browsing the shelves for a new love?

Can I say Diego from New York Minute? He’s Argentinian and has that sexy Spanish accent. He’s also a romantic at heart. Did I mention he’s a rockstar along the lines of Ed Sheeran and John Mayer?

I have a long list of boyfriends, but the last one I read is Jared from Game of Marriage by Karen Erickson. I love football quarterbacks!

NewYorkMinuteShy accountant Veronica Bass is determined to live it up a little before settling down with a perfectly respectable man to live a perfectly respectable life, just the way her mother wants.

So when rock star Diego Diaz flashes his bedroom eyes at her during a wedding reception, Veronica swallows her shyness and leads him to the nearest hotel room. Now this total sex god keeps popping up in her life, and she finds herself telling some not-so-little white lies to keep him interested.

Diego’s world evolves around music, women throwing themselves at him, and having fun. His lifestyle hasn’t allowed him to find the right girl to settle down with until now, but his own secret stands in the way of forming a lasting relationship with Veronica.

Is their love destined to last for only a New York minute?

Time to focus on the Cosmo article she read two days before about flirting. She sipped her citrus martini, and as she brought the glass down, she licked her lips and glanced at her target. He actually flinched, the hunger in his eyes darkening. Barely enough for anyone to notice, but she did. She ran her hand up and down her neck, closing her eyes for a minute. When she opened them to look his way again, he had already started to walk in her direction. No, he didn’t walk; he actually strutted like a man on a mission.

She was his mission. Shit. Shit. Shit. Play it cool, Veronica. You’re a strong, sensual woman. You can do this.

She sipped her yellow drink again to calm herself, and if she was lucky, he wouldn’t notice her shaking. Calm. Sensual. Like a boss.

He positioned himself in front of her, one hand in his pocket and the other holding a tumbler of brown liquid, and rocked on the heels of his dark Dolce & Gabbana brogues.

“Hello.” His voice reverberated down to her core.

She gulped her martini to gain more liquid courage, but rather than bravery, the unthinkable happened. She swallowed the cherry that swam in her drink and the tickle in her throat drove her into a coughing frenzy.

She tried to smile through it, to let him know all was fine and she could still be the sexy seductress. As his large, firm hand patted her back, she fanned the air and grabbed his tumbler, downing the thick liquid.

After a last cough, she cleared her throat one more time. “Whoa. What was that?”

“Whiskey. Neat.” He grinned, his gorgeous caramel eyes lit with an inner glow. “You okay?”

A warmth spread over her cheeks. Holy freaking embarrassment. “It was strong.”

“I could’ve warned you, I guess, but you were busy.” He grinned and squeezed her shoulder with his large hand.

Was that an accent? Damn, could he be more perfect? Immediately, she glanced at his hand that revealed several tattoos peeking out of his jacket hem, from his wrist all the way down to his fingers. No ring. Thank God.

“Can we forget that happened? I’m not usually like that.” She waved her hand in the air and winced inwardly.

God, she wanted to erase that doomed first impression. She was confident, dammit. She didn’t want this dreamy man to know she could be less than sophisticated. Her act was more difficult than she imagined.

“It’s a shame. I kind of liked the unusual first encounter. Not that I want you to choke, but I was ready to save you.” He braced his tattooed hand against the wall behind her, moving closer. His manly smell was soapy, with a hint of wood.

Save her he might. “Who are you?”

He squinted his glowing eyes and turned his head to the side. He didn’t say anything for a long time, just studied her and then rolled on the heels of his feet. “Who are you?”

His “r” rolled off his tongue with a Spanish accent of some kind.

“When someone answers a question with a question, it’s one of two things. Either the person doesn’t have anything interesting to say or he’s hiding something. Are you hiding something?”

He lowered his voice and ran a hand up her arm. “I think we all do. Why are you hiding in the corner?”

Damned if the man’s touch sent shivers all the way to her toes. “So someone like you would find me.”

“Like me? How am I?”

“A man with questions … and a devious grin.”

As suspected, his smile grew and his gaze sought hers. “Well, I came over to tell you how stunning you look, but being a woman of such deep insight, you might take that the wrong way, no?”

“I’ll take it any way you want.” Yep. The alcohol had definitely gotten to her.

Unscripted Love #TeaserTuesday — Lost Without You

9781440589959UNSCRIPTED LOVE my Reality TV Romance Box Set is still only $0.99 at most retailers and only $0.76 at Amazon! Crazy!

AMAZON              NOOK              KOBO                ALLROMANCE

Today I have a little teaser snippet from the third book in the series, Lost Without You. Enjoy!

“Each team should have a map in their possession.”

They should?

“Your first task is to find your site, set up camp with the gear provided, and survive your first night out in the wild. Tonight I’ll check in with each team to see how you’re doing. Teams, it’s time to get wild! The game officially begins now.”

Zoe watched quietly as the teams scrounged in their bags to find the maps that would lead them to their camps. A wave of relief came over her that this time she didn’t have to worry about strategy or getting along with the other contestants or any of the other things she’d had to worry about on the previous shows. This time, finally, she wouldn’t have to fear water challenges that threatened to remove her makeup in one splash. Sure, she’d always worn waterproof, but there was only so much it could withstand. She might have come across as calm and uncaring at the thought of going out on a canoe to grab a cache with Paige, Miles, and Ben, but on the inside, she’d been a quivering mess. At least this time all she had to do was show up, look pretty, smile, and read a few cue cards. No big deal.

“Ready to go?” Chip asked, motioning toward the trail all of the teams had now started down.

“Go where?”

“To the production camp.”

Zoe glanced around at the production trailers that looked pretty permanent by the park office. “Are the trailers going to meet us at the camp or are there some already waiting there?”

Just then a production person handed her a large backpack. The one she’d been told to pack. The one she thought she’d be unpacking soon into a nice chest of drawers in a cozy room somewhere.

Chip shook his head and looked worried for the first time ever in her memory. “Zoe, your job is to be near the contestants to host the show. The show takes place in the wilderness. The trees are too dense for the trailers and there are no nearby roads. I’m afraid the best you’re going to get for the next few weeks is a porta-potty and a private tent.”

Fear gripped Zoe. This couldn’t possibly be any worse. No bathroom with running water. No electricity. No cozy bed to curl up in each night.

“Let me guess,” she said through clenched teeth. It didn’t matter how cute Chip was, he could really be an annoying little shit when he wanted to be. “You’re staying here, right?” No way was Mr. Hot Shot Producer roughing it like she was being forced to.

“No, myself and a handful of other production people will be staying with you in a production base camp. We have tents and a little kitchen and even a couple of camping showers. Don’t worry, Zoe, you won’t be alone.”

“Oh, good, so there will be someone to hear me scream when I get eaten by a bear.” He laughed.

She didn’t.
