Ask an Author: Liia Ann White-Where She Gets Her Ideas

Heather: Today for Ask an Author I have invited my fellow Six Sentence Sunday peep Liia Ann White to stop by to answer a couple of questions. Liia is a multi-published author of paranormal romance.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known before you got published?

Liia: How patient you had to be. I am definitely NOT a patient person. When I want something, I want it now LOL. But being in the writing business has definitely taught me patience. Whether it be waiting to hear back on a submission, waiting for cover art or edits or a release date. I’ve learnt that each publisher works differently and the end result is definitely worth the wait.

Heather: I agree! I *wish* I’d known to expect so much waiting. It’s definitely a challenge to learn patience when all you want to do is know if you’ve been accepted/rejected, start on edits, see your cover art. I’ve found the best cure for painful waiting is to start work on something new. Which leads me to my next question.

How do you come up with new ideas?

Liia: I’ve always got ideas buzzing around my head. I have dreams, nightmares and night terrors each and every night. While I hate it and haven’t had a decent night’s sleep in years, I can’t complain because I always have ideas for new stories and characters.

Heather: OMG, Liia! That’s how you come up with great characters like Elora and Kadin? From night terrors?! Yikes, girl. LOL. That was not the answer I expected! So, now that we know how you create these awesome characters, I wonder what the heck you have to go through to actually write your stories—jump through rings of fire…walk on hot coals?

Are you a pantser or a plotter?

Liia: Ummmm.. A plonster? When an idea comes to mind, I generally have a basic outine ready. I tend to write that down before I begin writing the story. But, as all writers know, characters tend to have minds of their own and decide they don’t want to stick to your plot and the story can turn in a whole new direction.

Heather: I guess that would make me a plonster, too! Glad to hear I’m not the only one who’s characters take over the story and decide to bend it to their will. Sometimes characters really have a way of making us do their bidding!

What quality do you love most about your hero and heroine from Elora’s Match?

Liia: Elora and Kadin. What can I say about them? I love them!

I love Elora. She takes no crap, has a sarcastic kick-ass attitude, loves those close to her but has no time for strangers or users. She’s strong, sexy, loyal and fiercely protective of her best friend Caleb.

And Kadin. Well, he’s just sex on legs J He’s mysterious, sexy and protective.

I love the back and forth between Elora and Kadin. They’re as snarky as each other, have the same sarcastic sense of humour and familial values.

Heather: I really loved reading Elora and Kadin together. They were always full of fire and really drew me in to the story. And I love a girl who can kick-ass and a guy who can handle her…ahem, spirit! They really are a perfect match.

And now the question that I’m sure is on everyone’s mind… What’s your go-to snack while writing?

Liia: I don’t have a snack, but I always have either a Dr Pepper (if I’ve got any, it’s really hard to come by here), red cordial or Pepsi Max by my side when writing. Some have coffee or tea, I have soda and sugary cordial, hehe.

Heather: Now I wish I knew what a red cordial is? Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and answering these questions, Liia! It was a pleasure to have you here!!

RWA Conference Attire

I received such great feedback on my last conference post, I thought I’d ask another question. One of the comments that came up about the RWA National Conference in NYC is that you can’t wear jeans. YIKES! I live in jeans… So this raises the question, what is appropriate to wear to the conference?

But, I don’t think this question is that easy to answer. Here’s the thing, the conference is not just one kind of event. There’s a the workshops, chapter parties, book signings, hanging out with conference buds after hours, and let’s not forget the all-important agent/editor appointments.

If jeans aren’t appropriate, what is? Can I wear dressy capris? Does everything have to be long dress pants and dresses? If I go with dresses, how formal/casual should they be? Can blouses be sleeveless as long as their still dressy? Too many questions!

And let’s not forget shoes! Are sandals allowed as long as they’re not flip flops? Or do I have to suffer through wearing heels or <gasp> my dressy boots all day?

What, are you going to wear while attending the RWA conference in NYC?

Local Bookstores

Hi everyone,

I have a question that I’ve been thinking about for a while now. It seems like everyday on twitter I hear something about how the publishing industry is changing and going more toward the digital side. Of course paper books are still being produced, and I believe they always will be. But you can’t deny that ebook are on the rise to becoming the new favorite way to read. I’m all for ebooks. In fact, I’d say 99% of the books I buy now are digital. I love that I can hold thousands of book in my hand and still have nice clean bookshelves in my house.

With that said, I still think local bookstores are very important and it sucks to see them close their doors. I think it’s important to grow a love for books and reading in my children, so we will often go to the children’s section and play. They’ll pick up whatever books look interesting to them that day and we’ll sit and read for a bit. We always find books to buy. ALWAYS. I still go into my local Barnes and Nobel to buy not only children’s books, but also to stop in at the cafe for a coffee, and to pick up things like notebooks and thank you cards. But if I’m going to be honest, I rarely buy any adult fiction there. If I find a book I like, I often just go to my kindle app and buy it instantly. So the author is still getting the sale, but the local bookstore isn’t. I should also add that we do buy children’s books on our iPad as well, which is awesome for when we travel. But at night, when we’re cuddled under the blankets before bedtime, there’s nothing like reading a big paper picture book.

So, do you still visit your local bookstore? Do you still buy novels from them? Do you buy other items to support your local stores? There’s no right or wrong to this question, I’m just curious how others feel about the changing landscape of book buying.

Looking Ahead to RWA National Conference in NYC!

The conference is only about 6 weeks away which means there are many authors out there getting sweaty palms—myself included.

This will be my first conference ever, of any kind. Go big or go home, right? Yikes! I’m really looking forward to the experience. I’m excited about meeting fellow authors and possibly a few agents and editors along the way. But mostly I’m excited for the workshops. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to learn from some of the romance community’s best writer’s, agents, and editors. I want to go and absorb as much as I possibly can. I’ll be a giant sponge!

So looking ahead to the conference, what do I need to do to prepare? I have two manuscripts that are ready to pitch—and two pitch appointments! Eeek! What else do I need besides a couple of finished projects, a big smile and an over-eager attitude to learn? Here’s what I’m thinking.

-A notebook would probably be a good idea for taking notes at the previously mentioned awesome workshops. But do I need a laptop too? Or my ipad? What do people usually bring with them into the workshops?

-I figure I need a couple of new outfits. Since I’m a stay at home mom in my real life, my basic wardrobe of jeans, t-shirts and flipflops probably isn’t convention appropriate. So what do I need to wear?

-Swag??? Those little give away items that go in the goodie room, do I need those? Are you bringing any? How many does a person need to put in the goodie room when there are going to be 2000 people in attendance? Not to mention, my first book, Love and Lattes, isn’t due to be released until September. Is it worth it to put swag in the goodie room for a book that’s not available for another two months?

-Business card. Got those. 250 of them. Is that enough? Too many? Does it matter since they take up almost no space in my bag? LOL!

What else to I need to do/get/prep before nationals rolls around? Any help for this newbie would be fantastic.
