RWA Conference Attire

I received such great feedback on my last conference post, I thought I’d ask another question. One of the comments that came up about the RWA National Conference in NYC is that you can’t wear jeans. YIKES! I live in jeans… So this raises the question, what is appropriate to wear to the conference?

But, I don’t think this question is that easy to answer. Here’s the thing, the conference is not just one kind of event. There’s a the workshops, chapter parties, book signings, hanging out with conference buds after hours, and let’s not forget the all-important agent/editor appointments.

If jeans aren’t appropriate, what is? Can I wear dressy capris? Does everything have to be long dress pants and dresses? If I go with dresses, how formal/casual should they be? Can blouses be sleeveless as long as their still dressy? Too many questions!

And let’s not forget shoes! Are sandals allowed as long as they’re not flip flops? Or do I have to suffer through wearing heels or <gasp> my dressy boots all day?

What, are you going to wear while attending the RWA conference in NYC?

    Hi Heather:
I don’t remember seeing anyone in a dress except for the Awards Dinner.
A nice new pair of black or white jeans is really OK. Sandals are fine as long as you have a pedicure (LOL). Capri with a nice shirt is also acceptable.
If you have an agent/editor appointment – then you need the dress slacks or skirt/dress.
It’s better to be comfortable and be who you are than to put on a show.

      Hi Liz,

Thanks for your input on what to wear. It’s nice to hear from someone who’s been to the conference before. I think I’m going to try for a pair of black dress pants/dressy capris and a pair of comfortable, but dressy sandals. It’s truly sad that I have not a single pair of dress pants in my closet. Not much use for them while I’m home with the kids! I hope to see you at the conference this year!
