Ask an Author: Liia Ann White-Where She Gets Her Ideas

Heather: Today for Ask an Author I have invited my fellow Six Sentence Sunday peep Liia Ann White to stop by to answer a couple of questions. Liia is a multi-published author of paranormal romance.

What’s one thing you wish you would have known before you got published?

Liia: How patient you had to be. I am definitely NOT a patient person. When I want something, I want it now LOL. But being in the writing business has definitely taught me patience. Whether it be waiting to hear back on a submission, waiting for cover art or edits or a release date. I’ve learnt that each publisher works differently and the end result is definitely worth the wait.

Heather: I agree! I *wish* I’d known to expect so much waiting. It’s definitely a challenge to learn patience when all you want to do is know if you’ve been accepted/rejected, start on edits, see your cover art. I’ve found the best cure for painful waiting is to start work on something new. Which leads me to my next question.

How do you come up with new ideas?

Liia: I’ve always got ideas buzzing around my head. I have dreams, nightmares and night terrors each and every night. While I hate it and haven’t had a decent night’s sleep in years, I can’t complain because I always have ideas for new stories and characters.

Heather: OMG, Liia! That’s how you come up with great characters like Elora and Kadin? From night terrors?! Yikes, girl. LOL. That was not the answer I expected! So, now that we know how you create these awesome characters, I wonder what the heck you have to go through to actually write your stories—jump through rings of fire…walk on hot coals?

Are you a pantser or a plotter?

Liia: Ummmm.. A plonster? When an idea comes to mind, I generally have a basic outine ready. I tend to write that down before I begin writing the story. But, as all writers know, characters tend to have minds of their own and decide they don’t want to stick to your plot and the story can turn in a whole new direction.

Heather: I guess that would make me a plonster, too! Glad to hear I’m not the only one who’s characters take over the story and decide to bend it to their will. Sometimes characters really have a way of making us do their bidding!

What quality do you love most about your hero and heroine from Elora’s Match?

Liia: Elora and Kadin. What can I say about them? I love them!

I love Elora. She takes no crap, has a sarcastic kick-ass attitude, loves those close to her but has no time for strangers or users. She’s strong, sexy, loyal and fiercely protective of her best friend Caleb.

And Kadin. Well, he’s just sex on legs J He’s mysterious, sexy and protective.

I love the back and forth between Elora and Kadin. They’re as snarky as each other, have the same sarcastic sense of humour and familial values.

Heather: I really loved reading Elora and Kadin together. They were always full of fire and really drew me in to the story. And I love a girl who can kick-ass and a guy who can handle her…ahem, spirit! They really are a perfect match.

And now the question that I’m sure is on everyone’s mind… What’s your go-to snack while writing?

Liia: I don’t have a snack, but I always have either a Dr Pepper (if I’ve got any, it’s really hard to come by here), red cordial or Pepsi Max by my side when writing. Some have coffee or tea, I have soda and sugary cordial, hehe.

Heather: Now I wish I knew what a red cordial is? Thank you so much for stopping by my blog and answering these questions, Liia! It was a pleasure to have you here!!

    Hi Liia!!

Thank you so much for coming to my site and participating in Ask an Author! I had so much fun reading your novel. I’m crossing my fingers you are going to give your loyal readers a sequel!

    1. Liia Ann White says:

      Thanks babe!
I’m currently working on the sequel. Elora’s being a pain and doesn’t want to work for me at the moment, but I’ve got some very fun and sexy surprises planned for her 😉

      1. Heather says:

I can’t wait to find out what those sexy surprises are!

  2. Shoshanna Evers says:

Great interview! And the book cover is absolutely gorgeous 🙂

    1. Heather says:

Oh, I love her cover, too!

    2. Liia Ann White says:

Thanks darling. I love the cover, I don’t think I’ll ever love a cover as much as I do this one. Reese did a great job with it 😉

  3. Tara Stearns says:

Great question, great answers. Elora’s match sounds right up my alley.

    1. Heather says:

Hi Tara! Thanks for coming by my blog. I think you’ll love Elora’s Match!

  4. Wendy S. Marcus says:

Great interview. I don’t typically snack while I’m writing, but when I really get going on an idea and I’m psyched that everything’s going well, I crave chocolate. Come to think of it, I crave chocolate when the words aren’t flowing, too. Go figure!

    1. Liia Ann White says:

That’s what I drink cordial for – the sugar boost 🙂
Pepsi Max is good because it’s fizzy and gives the illusion of sugar haha

      1. Heather says:

I’m a chocolate lover too, Wendy! And cake, and soda… Well, you get the point! I recently gave up my sugary drinks, so now it’s just water and coffee (with sugar!) for me.

  5. Layna Pimentel says:

    Great interview ladies!

Liia – what the hell is red cordial? Oh, and kick-ass heroines always rock!

    1. Liia Ann White says:

Wait, you don’t have cordial?! It’s a syrup you mix with water.. SO tasty and full of sugar hehe

  6. Jeff Salter says:

A PLONSTER? LOL. I guess that’s also what I am.
Enjoyed the interview. Sorry you can’t sleep well. I went through several years of that … it’s a killer.

    1. Heather says:

I love PLONSTER! That might be my new favorite word. Thanks for stopping by, Jeff!

  7. Liia Ann White says:

I can’t believe you guys don’t have cordial! I just realised it’s an Aussie drink
http://www.cottees.com.au/ <— that's the cordial I love. Red fills you with sugar and gives me the perfect boost for writing.

  8. Angela Kay Austin says:

Lila, characters truly do take over, eventually. And my secret “brainfood” while writing is ice cream, which may not be the best idea 🙂

    BTW, love the cover!

    1. Heather says:

Hi Angela! Thanks for stopping by. I’m not much for ice cream while writing, but on the weekend…well, that’s a different story! I’m super happy to hear that I’m not the only one with a sweet tooth!

  9. Jennifer Probst says:

HI Heather, Liaa, Great interview! I need coffee and my Ipod to be happy – chocolate would bliss me out too much and distract me! Love the blurb – book looks wonderful!

    1. Liia Ann White says:

Haha there’s such a thing as too much bliss? 😉
      Thanks for dropping by Jennifer!

  10. Heather says:

    Hi Jen,

Thanks for stopping by to say hi! I can deal with chocolate when I write, but not music. I find music so distracting! Instead of writing I just end up singing along. LOL.
