Update: Jan, 2011

Three weeks into the year of goals and things are going well. I took a course about a week ago through Writers Digest about how to start your story right. It was great! Sara Megibow of the Neslon Literary Agency was the host and she spoke about all the things you should and shouldn’t do in your opening pages. I really enjoyed listening to an industry professional discuss this aspect of the business and also the craft of writing. She discussed not onlywhy the first pages are so important—they’re the pages that will hook an agent, editor or reader—but also how to write your first pages to avoid common red flags. Needless to say, I’ve spent a few hours this past week revising my first three pages. So far so good, I think.

I’ve also been taking a self-editing online workshop hosted by Angela James. Wow. I’ll have a post on that in another week or so when the workshop is over, but lets just say it’s fantastic!

So far I feel like I’m starting my year off right. I’m writing, I’m revising, and I’m learning. This is going to be my year!
